Stanford HyPE: High School to PhD Exploration Day. This is the second year we’ve put this event together, which invites ~100 Bay Area high school students to campus for a day. The students are primarily from first generation, low-income, and/or under-represented communities. We discuss the many educational and career paths in Bioscience that employ a PhD and research with the goal of inspiring them to pursue a higher education. Our hope is that we can diversify the next generation of scientists by reaching students who are less likely to be familiar with this information or these opportunities earlier on in their education. The event includes science lab tours, college admissions discussion, hands-on science activities, explanation of a PhD, panel of current undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a campus tour.
